3 firefighters hurt battling blaze at Wellesley home

Published by The Boston Globe

Three fighters received minor injuries battling a three-alarm blaze that tore through a house in Wellesley this morning, fire officials said.

The fire resulted in traffic delays on Route 9 eastbound from Natick to Route 16, police said in an alert to residents. There were also delays on Linden Street, and Rockland Street was closed.

The fire at 41 Kimlo Rd. was reported at about 3:30 a.m. and it took firefighters two to three hours to bring the blaze under control, said Wellesley deputy fire chief Jeffrey Peterson.

‘‘It’s still an active scene, so we’re still collecting information,’’ Peterson said. ‘‘But we don’t believe the fire was suspicious. The occupants of the house awoke to the smell of smoke and escaped the house with no injuries.’’

Firefighters from Newton’s Engine 7 assisted in fighting the fire. Two Newton firefighters and one Wellesley firefighter received minor injuries, officials said.

The house has been owned by Lena and Arne Gustafson since 1987, according to the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds.

Tina Sandford, who also lives on Kimlo Road, said she and her husband, Paul, first became aware of the fire when their electricity went out.

"We couldn't smell anything, so Paul went out and he and a neighbor walked down to the house," Sandford said. "We're all in shock. It's so surreal. ''

The Gustafsons "adored that house. They were always taking care of it."

Sandford said she did not know where the Gustafsons were staying since the fire.
