A woman riding a motor scooter was killed today in a collision with a car on a residential street in Newton, authorities said.
The crash occurred at 2:15 p.m. on Ward Street near Grant Avenue in Newton Centre, police and fire officials said.
A spokeswoman for the Middlesex District Attorney’s office confirmed that the victim was an adult female riding a Vespa, but provided no further details. She said her office was investigating the fatality.
Newton resident Marianne Dornfeld said she came upon the accident while riding on her own Vespa with a friend.
“The woman was lying lifeless in the road,” Dornfeld said. “When they took her away, she had her helmet still on, and her face was still bloody.”
The victim’s green Vespa was to the right of the road and the scooter’s luggage rack was on the left, Dornfeld said. A blue Subaru Legacy was also at the scene.
‘‘It’s extremely upsetting,’’ she said. ‘‘I’ve been riding a Vespa for two years and I love to ride. Every time I go out we do think about it. A Vespa is very vulnerable, just like bikes.’’
Another woman who lives on Ward Street said she was finishing a late lunch when she heard a loud noise and a voice. She went outside and saw the vehicles near her driveway.
“It’s one of those freakish things where it happens, and five minutes later it’s almost impossible to reconstruct,” said the woman, who declined to be identified.
Hours after the crash, Ward Street was blocked off as investigators attempted to reconstruct the accident.
