A Wellesley girl was awakened this morning shortly after 6 by flames that had spread to the end of her bed. She quickly escaped before fire engulfed the bed in her second floor bedroom at 32 Bernard Rd., fire officials said.
The girl, another child, an adult and the family dog fled the house as the blaze caused fire and smoke damage to the second floor. They were not injured, said Wellesley Deputy Chief Jeff Peterson.
He would not identify the family members.
Fire officials believe the fire was started by a wiring problem in the wall.
Peterson said the fire department received the call at 6:27 a.m. and had the fire extinguished within a half an hour. A firefighter was sent to the hospital for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, but he has been released with no injuries,he said.
The home is currently uninhabitable, Peterson said.
Officials originally thought the air conditioning unit in the bedroom window caught fire, but after further investigation, they believe the cause was a wiring problem in the wall. The outlet that the air conditioner was plugged into probably started the flames, Peterson said.
